Reggae - A daily blog

Ben Sherman goes too far

July 17th 2006 12:00
Ben Sherman has long been associated with ska and reggae and the subcultures that have supported this music – skinheads and mods. Often it is these people that have helped the brand rather than the other way around and they’ve gone even further now.

It is pretty much common knowledge that Ben Sherman has become shite, the death of the man who started the company, which once was really only available in the UK, is only a memory and they are a company with no clue whatsoever. Terrible loud shirts, little production of the simple traditional style they made their name for and boutique shops staffed by people who knew nothing of the images that were splashed around the stores of mods, skins and scooters.

Ben Sherman USA seem to have their own gear, not necessarily common with the UK lines. Now they have used the names of current USA bands and artists to describe their different styles of clothing WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. Not only that, but the shirts are hideous! Some examples…

Hideous Aggrolites Shirt for US$ 70!

Aggrolites

Boring Toasters Jacket goes for a small fortune at US$150!

Toasters

For the Aussies, a hideous pink shirt with the Porkers name on it!

I don't have to be objective. I do have a lot of Ben Sherman's, but this article is to express my frustration with the direction the company is going in. The quality is no longer as good as it once was, most of their garments are made in Asia and they exploit the images of the people that made the brand - the mods, skins and rudeboys.

OK, now the Ben Sherman brand takes a new direction but their historic shirts are made always. I think that Ben Sherman is the alone brand in clothing mods-ska-rudeboys market (sorry for my english, again). Ben Sherman quality is good for me and the brand is like the other brand, their products are made in Asia (sometime in Turkey, Italy and UK). For me, Ben Sherman brand will be one of the best brand (like Fred Perry, Paul Smith, Prada...). Have you seen this shirt made by Junya Watanabee for Ben Sherman (the price is too much !) : http://www.maximmag.co.uk/fashion/news/3294/ben_sherman.html

Interesting. I don't know what I think of the zips though? I like that it is more fitted though.

There are other brands like DNA Groove in Italy that are made for Mods by Mods and I would be more inclined to go with them, though I admit I still will buy vintage Ben Shermans, just not the new stuff.
