Fun Boy Three and The Bodysnatchers

This blog isn’t going to be a name and shame type article where bands I think are bad will just cop it, but I am going to suggest some bands that perhaps just didn’t get it quite right.
The first is Fun Boy Three. For such a well dressed, rudeboy looking guys when they were in the Specials, Terry Hall, Neville Staple and Lynval Golding sure managed to look effeminate when they formed Fun Boy Three. They would probably say to you that they weren’t a ska band and it is true they were just a pop band really, but they still deserve a mention. Their songs were really crap too. I don’t know that it was the best move to team up with their female equivalent in Bananarama.
Another group that has to get an honourable mention is The Bodysnatchers. Formed to get in on the ska boom, some members of this all girl band supposedly couldn’t even play their instruments. That said, Rhoda Dakar, the lead singer, was quite an exceptional front woman and went on to do songs with the Specials and still performs today. I’d like to add that although the Bodysnatchers aren’t all that polished, they remain quite popular with songs like Do the Rocksteady, The Boiler and Easy Life still much loved. I will admit that I love the band, though I know others don’t speak so fondly of them.
I have concentrated on the 2-tone era a bit and the more I think about it, the more I could add. I find some of the Europeans take of the 2-tone style can be quite cheesy, but perhaps that should be left for another day.
