Firehouse Reggae Sound System Sydney

I don’t want to favour certain gigs or club nights in my blog because good reggae nights should be attended and supported, so because two nights ago I plugged 45 RPM at Dimitri’s on Friday night, I though I’d talk about Fire House Sound System tonight, which is to be held on Saturday night at the Marquee in Camperdown.
The Firehouse Sound System is up there with Nasty Tek as the most popular sound systems in Sydney. The crew behind Firehouse have been collecting Jamaican music for decades and their record collection reflects that.
My memories of Firehouse nights go back to when they did a regular gig at the Spanish Club, in Sydney City. The place was always packed full of people dancing well into the night. The atmosphere these people created was aided by the fantastic bass orientated sound setup Firehouse have. A one off was a horn section accompanying certain tracks, while common place were Jamaicans with the mic chatting over the top of other tracks.
From recent experience, the range of genres is a lot broader than it once was. Where it was largely dancehall and roots focussed, more sixties rocksteady and ska is being thrown in. The Marquee is a top, underrated venue with a big dance floor and areas to sit and relax. Drink prices are high and there isn’t any tap beer, but have a few at the pub first and then head over – will be a top night.
