Mods Mayday - the aftermath
May 7th 2007 10:09
Well once again it has come and gone. Mods Mayday has traditionally been one of the most successful events we’ve run in Sydney and this year was no exception. Despite the fact we only organised it three weeks ago, and only used myspace and word of mouth to promote the event, we had an exceptional turnout, with lots of young and old(er) coming out for the gig.
It was a pretty good room for the event – not too big and plenty of lounges for people to sit on. The Get Set came on and played a decent set of covers, though I think they actually performed better at their first gig late last year.
The dance floor stayed quite busy as everyone waited for Pat Powell, the man to lead the Rocksteady Ratpack, to show up. Eventually he did however and the band played what I thought was a sterling set of Jamaican covers, with a couple Club Ska songs thrown in. Highlights were Prince Buster’s 30 Pieces of Silver, Intensified and Cindy singing Phyllis Dillon’s Perfidia. Although there were a few criticisms, I felt that after only two rehearsals the band produced a fantastic sound and we look forward to having them play again.
After the Rocksteady Ratpack finished, Sara entertained the crowd until the RSL Nazis cut the sound off, albeit a little early. It was probably a good thing though, as I was quite ready to hit the sack. Thanks to everyone who came along and especially to those that helped us organise the evening, particularly Simon Smith and Andy Mifsud.
