Take It or Leave It August

August 7th 2007 11:28
It has been some time since I have made a post on here, but what better way to return than with news of the next Take It or Leave It night in Sydney. This Saturday it will be the seventh night at the Sly Fox under this name and there's no sign of it tapering off at all.

This will be the first month without Torrin spinning, as he is held up in Brisbane for a while, but we have some worthy replacements. As well as myself and semi-regular Marek spinning we will have two debuts. Ben and Sean (of AVO) will fill out the lineup and as usual you expect the best in ska, reggae, punk, sixties and the like. Entry as always is free right up until the 3 am close.

New Aggrolites videos

July 12th 2007 04:54
Here are a couple of the latest official Aggrolites videos. The Free Time video is quite good and the Work It video gives us some insight to life as an aggrolite, though I'd like to also see some anecdotes. Gaz Mayall of The Trojans can be spotted if you look closely.

Take It or Leave It July

July 11th 2007 05:35
It is that time of the month again! Take It or Leave It is this Saturday at the Sly Fox on Enmore Rd, Enmore. Last month, though a good turn out, was witness to some pretty miserable weather. Let's hope the rain holds off this time around as we have a pretty big month planned with Sara from 45 RPM on the wheels of steel with Thommo from AVO, as well as regular Toz and myself. With two brand spankers this month the sounds could be a little more varied than before with some mod, soul and Oi! added to the usual dose of ska, reggae and punk.

Entry is free as always and we'll be spinning from 9 pm til 3 am. Come along and make sure you have your dancing shoes on!

Not done by me, but good reading nonetheless.

Being so far from the UK, Madness news has somewhat of a distant effect, but it is good to hear there are plans of keeping the show on the road for a little while to come. They are playing some big shows currently and hopefully I'll be able to catch them next year.

The interview with Chrissy Boy comes from the Madness Trading Ring. He has only just recently rejoined the bands after a break doing his own thing. Many agree it isn't quite the same minus any of the original members, so it is good to have him back. They have an awful lot going on, including a soon to be released album. I was quite disappointed with one of the singles, Sorry, but Chrissy Boy puts this to rest saying the newer songs are much better and that they are all actually playing on it. Record companies gone mad IMO (regarding Sorry that is).

July Dynamite at the Brighton

July 6th 2007 01:22
Hopefully they won't have too many US sailors turn up at this event, but I'd like to see others. It is of course the return of the great Dynamite Sounds @ the Brighton Up Bar on Oxford St, Darlinghurst. The boys took a month of last month, meaning I've been hanging out for this one a bit more. Franco and Count Doyle will be playing some really great tunes as usual, this month with a bit wider scope than usual, but I'm sure there will be plenty of ska, reggae and rocksteady. The starting time is 930, which is a little later than I want to get going, but these Surry Hills folks are determined to start late.

SkaBQ this weekend

June 25th 2007 06:38
Well I'm counting down the days until I have 8 young blokes from Melbourne staying on my floor. They are the Beefeaters, and this coming weekend they will be playing two shows in Sydney with a bunch of bands designed to enhance your dancing and listening pleasure.

Friday 29th June @ the Sando (King St, Newtown)

Just browsing the Trojan website forum and there's a thread about an article telling of the imminent sale of Sanctuary music group to Universal. Sanctuary acquired the famous UK reggae label Trojan some time ago.

Daily ska videos on Myspace

June 14th 2007 05:51
There is an interesting myspace project just begun, which flows from my recernt posts on youtube videos. Ska Vids is the name of the page and each day they feature 5 videos based on a country. I will be interested to see how long they can keep this up, but if they do, which depends on how many ska videos there are I suppose, then it will be a good way of following what is going on in world ska.

As an example, today is Spain, and features videos from the likes of the Pepperpots and Dr. Calypso. The Pepperpots video is particularly good - check out the three female vocalists' synchronised dance moves

Not since last December have we had two big nights of ska in Sydney, but the last weekend of June will bring it back to the fore.

Melbourne band The Beefeaters are the feature act of the weekend. They are a young bunch of guys playing a set of 2-tone and Australian ska with more enthusiasm than any other band I've seen in some time. They bring the freshest approach to the great music in Australian ska and I am sure they will entertain Sydney folk, as they have done Melbourne crowds

I am not sure whether this is purely coincidence, but I had the flier below posted on the 45 RPM website. Notice that the night is called Night at the Hop and it is presented by a mob called Take It or Leave It.

Now I realise neither of these names are original when we (folk from Melbourne and us in Sydney) use them, they were pinched from the Derrick Morgan tune and the Madness song and film respectively, but it seems strange that the two ska, reggae and 2-tone nights that are running in Australia at the moment would be combined to create a new night in Druzba

Just when I was thinking there wasn't anything interesting coming up for a while (apart from the Skabq weekend of course), this little gig pops up that definitely caught my eye.

Backy Skank haven't played in a while, but they will be headlining this gig at Hermann's at Sydney Uni in just under a couple of weeks. Hopefully they will pull out some new tunes. Joining them will be newcomers The Elephant Gods. I say newcomers, but this big lineup are being drawn from a number of current and former Sydney bands. Listen to their garage sounds on their Myspace

There has been a decent response to the news of The Signals CD launch. As a reminder, it is this Sunday @ Spectrum, which is on the Hyde Park end of Oxford St in Darlinghurst. For your $7 cover charge you'll get a copy of the CD on top of getting to see the band play and dance to the Freedom Sounds DJs before and after.

It will be new guitarist Will's first show, which we are quite excited about. It will also be Gorman's last show before he heads overseas to take up an internship with Google. Some little internet company I think they are. It will be an interesting time coming up for the band with a couple of shows, but most likely will stick to the irregular schedule we're used to

How time flies. It seems like only yesterday when I was writing about the release of their self-titled album on Hellcat Records. Now the hottest name in reggae music, The Aggrolites are releasing their third album, titled Reggae Hit LA on June 5th. They've been busy boys since the release of their second album, with a packed touring schedule including a stint supporting Madness. They've also supplied backing to Tim Armstrong's own project. His album with the group is called A Poet's Life and features the Aggrolites' distinctive reggae sound. It has just been released and can be heard in full at the Rancid myspace.

In interviews and reviews there has been talk of The new Aggro album sounding a little different to their previous two and if the song Free Time on their Myspace is anything to go by, the sound has got a whole lot more groove. It's still dirty, but a little bit smoother
