Reggae - A daily blog

Kingtide this Sunday

May 18th 2007 10:01
Before the Signals CD launch next Sunday, Freedom Sounds plays host to Kingtide this week. It's $12 to get in, which is a little dear in my opinion, but they are a good band that attract a decent crowd. For those who haven't heard them, they play a mix of roots and a little earlier reggae (read: a few toots covers.

The date is the 20th May and the venue is Spectrum. 8 pm doors go open.

I haven't decided whether or not I'll head down, but they probably won't miss me as they usually get a decent crowd along. Not your usual reggae crowd, but that's okay...

A little bit of self interest in today's blog as The Signals actually get a look in with this great podcast featuring a whole range of international ska bands.

There are two sets, so to speak, by different presenters picking some songs from non-US ska and reggae bands. The Signals can be seen in the second set with Sure Shot. Some of my favourite bands in the list include The Jim Murple Memorial from France, Babylove & The Van Dangos and The Kinky Coocoos.

Take It or Leave It May

May 9th 2007 07:50
No rest for the wicked. It seems as though I blink and we're back at that time of the month. The second Saturday that is, when we run Take It or Leave It. If you got along to Mods Mayday last Saturday well done, but you should also back up and come along to this Saturday's night of ska, reggae, punk and a bit of everything else.

As usual, it is free to get into the Sly Fox, meaning more cash for drinking.

This month we have our regular DJs, but also the addition of the guys from Dynamite Sounds - very much a pleasure. These guys are running one of the most successful club nights in Surry Hills and play predominantly Jamaican music, so it is great to have them join us.

Check the flyer for more details:

This Sunday, the weekly club @ Spectrum on Oxford, Freedom Sounds, will be running an Oldies Session with Firehouse. Firehouse, as mentioned previously, is known for it dancehall and roots dances, but the boys behind it are well known for their great early Jamaican music collection, so they're (finally) doing a dance for us ska, rocksteady and skinhead reggae fans.

$7 will get you in, with the night kicking off at 8 pm

Trojan Records goes digital

April 20th 2007 07:57
I'll be honest, I haven't yet embraced paying to download digital music. I don't use an mp3 player, but many do, so for them, news that Trojan has started to place titles online, on the Itunes store is probably good news.

I know a lot of peer 2 peer sharing of Trojan material takes place, but only now has the company decided to go in this direction. It is about time. No doubt up until now they have missed out on a decent sized market

April 18th 2007 05:19
It isn't far away, just over two weeks actually, so the promotion train must really begin.

The poster is below. Remember, entry is free, but if you live within 5 km you may have to become a Newtown RSL member for a short price

We didn't do Mods Mayday last year, but we're bringing it back this year, mainly because so many people have hassled us about it. Anyway, it is on and the good news is it will be free. I think in 2005 it was 30 bucks to get in, but this year, we won't be charging a penny.

The venue is the RSL @ Newtown, on the lower end of Enmore Rd. The date is Saturday May 5th 2007 and it will start about 830 pm

Well this Saturday is the second Saturday of the month and in Sydney these days, it means one thing - Take It or Leave It is on at the Sly Fox, Enmore Rd, Enmore.

The club, as usual is free, starts at nine and goes until about 4 am. The music will be the best dance floor fillers in the genres of ska, reggae, 2-tone and punk

Firehouse has an oldies session

April 9th 2007 08:13
The title says it all and I'm excited. They've been talking about it for some time and I know the Firehouse boys have the records, so it is good they are finally doing a dance of early Jamaican sounds. Sounds of a young Jamaica, as it says on the flier, hopefully refers to an independent Jamaica, meaning we will see some ska, rocksteady and early reggae.

The addition of Chris from 2RRR's Laweless Street also adds to the credibility of this event. Years of doing dancehall events is fine, but in my opinion, the good times come when the sixties sounds are the focus

Soul Jazz Records reissuing of Studio One releases continues, this time with a compilation titled, Studio One Kings. The name says it all - here we have the biggest male names that used their voice to create hits for the Coxsone Dodd label. I don't know that much needs to be said about this album - the list of artists will speak for themseves. The tracks aren't the most obvious for each artist either, which means while some labels reissuing reggae are throwing out party reggae albums, Soul Jazz is more on the money. I was lucky enough to be given this on double LP, so I'm off to listen to it as I get ready to go out.

Rastawookie Album launch

April 5th 2007 06:53
I haven't seen Rastawookie for a couple of years now, which is strange in a way considering I used to see them all the time. But life is like that isn't it. They've changed their musical direction a little and I've maintained more of an interest in the original ska sound.

They still remain popular though and they have an album coming out very soon. The album is called Perfectly Ordinary and the launch for it will be on Saturday April 21st @ the metro

I'm not sure what the reason is, but Gogol Bordello are pulling out of all their Australian shows, which were meant to be starting this Thursday!

I personally wasn't especially interested in seeing this band, but many have said they are a fantastic live act. My interest was in Flogging Molly, who I am glad haven't pulled out

In my inbox this morning I found, as I always do on a Monday morning, the Madness Information Service weekly newsletter.

In it there was some interesting news, that continues on from the last two blogs, about films based around ska and reggae. The first was a review of excellent skinhead film This is England and the second was news of a movie titled Clubbed based around the emerging 2-tone ska scene in Coventry in the late 1970s to be released early next year
