A reggae new years eve

I was lucky enough to head down to Melbourne (from Sydney) for New Years Eve to DJ "A Night at the Hop". The venue was The British Crown and saw a select number gather for a night of reggae, ska, soul and mod.
Although I think Sydney has just as strong a scene in terms of punters heading to these sort of nights (perhaps even stronger) in Melbourne there is an excellent turnout of people, many as young as sixteen and seventeen embracing the lifestyle too. So you get a good filtering of Fred Perrys, Ben Shermans and suits.
I enjoyed Gus's set of predominantly Northern sounds, and I spent a good amount of time on the dancefloor for this. Mainly because I hadn't danced to a good set of stompers in some time. I also enjoyed Lee's set, which mixed up the Mod, soul and JA music nicely. Phil early on played some nice rocksteady tunes and Doug played the classics to finish the night with a good dancefloor. I tried to mix some more well known tunes with a bit of rocksteady and was happy with the response.
I will say this, I wish DJs would fuck off CDs and play their records. I don't like the direction it is going - I want the collecting to be as important as the selecting of tunes. Otherwise, you have the choice of every single song ever recorded and anyone can have a go.
All in all though, a great do and I'll be back during the year for another dance at the hop.
