Reggae - A daily blog

On Monday I reflected on the first two days of The Beefeaters Sydney weekend. Well today, it is the SkaBQ.

Saturday morning I woke up reasonably early considering the events of the long weekend so far. I did a last minute Yellow Pages search to find a small goods place I could get a whole lot of meat from. I headed out on the Vespa and went to Marrickville Metro to stock up on the snags. 200 sausages, a couple of kg of steak, condiments and loaves of break piled on to the back of the PX200 and I was on my way to Harp. The bloke from Kennards was on time with the BBQ and after we'd set that up, I was back home to get organised.

Despite having organised a good portion of the gig at the last minute, things ran rather smoothly. It took some time to get a decent crowd in, but there was a decent atmosphere. Jed Madmen's new band was rather disappointing considering what he had produced previously, but there were some good times to come. We (The Signals) were a lot better than the previous night I felt and The Beefeaters were exceptional, with many people complimenting them afterwards. They even had two encore calls. Backy Skank got through quite a few tunes and were very pleasing to the crowd. Last up was a band known as The Andy Mifsud experience with a who's who of the Sydney ska scene. They played a mix of ska and reggae covers that finished off the night well. A quick load out into three cabs and we were back to base. Many hands really do make light work.

The Beefeaters boys and I were very pleased at the warmth of the crowd's reception for them over both gigs. On Sunday, after a few sore heads were shaken off, we all headed to the Hollywood Hotel for the last Sunday Best. 'Tis a shame as it a great pub that suits the fine tunes that were being played.

Monday came along pretty quickly and although I was able to reclaim my house, it was definitely a pleasure having the Beef stay. They are a fun bunch of nice guys who I highly recommend seeing if you get the chance.

A few pics from the weekend with the Beefeaters, as promised. I'm still smiling from remembering how good it was.

Beefeaters Sydney tour

It has been a pretty hectic last four days with Melbourne band The Beefeaters in town. I'll have some pics tomorrow hopefully, but for today, a few reflections...

The boys arrived on my doorstep at around 6:30 pm on Thursday. It was going to be tight fitting 8 people in the house for four nights, but they are young and happy to sleep anywhere. I wish I had the same attitude. Night one was not a gig night, so we headed off to the Duke on Enmore Rd for a feed and a few beers. An attempt by one member to get into the Townhall using an ID showing he was still 17 led to some laughs and a splitting of the group as some of us decided the Carlisle was an easier option. The drinking continued well into the night with our flatmate Sara entertaining the youth with tales of the good ol' days.

On Friday, after we surfaced, the record shops were hit. A few Newtown shops will be happy to have gotten rid of a decent amount of their ska and mod. (Plug: Kiwi punk Affy has opened up a shop called Stikki Records. It's down the bottom end of King St and is well worth supporting). Before gig time we went and had dinner at the Lansdowne, which is cheap, but also nasty and probably not worth the effort, though some will disagree.

We got to the Lansdowne nice and early and while it looked as though it would be dead early, there was a good crowd when we went on around 845. It was our fill-in drummer James' first gig, and he did a great job despite only 2 practices under his belt. The Beefeaters went on next and the nature of the Sando meant they started playing to a small crowd, but it soon swelled and by mid set they had the floor shaking from all dancers. It has been a while since such a young enthusiastic ska group were seen in Sydney. Excellent! Calls for one more were accepted and they came off a very happy mob. Although they are only playing covers, they really were on the mark and with a couple of new members they have improved immensely since we saw them in Melbourne in February. The last band of the night were The Elephant Gods and although good and new they probably don't fit into a ska lineup. Nonetheless, it was a great gig.

Drinking once again continued into the night back at the house.

Tomorrow - Saturday, Sunday and photos!

I can't claim to have stumbled on this great blog, Vintage Boss, but it must receive exposure, and I am happy to give it. For the record, I discovered it while browsing the Chatty Mouth forum, which also comes highly recommended.

Vintage Boss is the blog of Colby Graham, a publisher out of Jamaica who is determined to ensure the history of Jamaican music doesn't disappear. His production of a regular magazine and DVDs has grown to include this new project.

He explores the likes of Patricia Chin, Randy Chin's wife as well as even lesser known talents, such as Alphanso Castro who, rather than being a musician, was and is known for the other Jamaican love of dancing.

For me, I was taken by the site because of the reference to a 1960s group I have recently come across called The Royals. I was very pleased to see The Royals evolved into a group called The Jays and they are still performing today!

Bookmark the Vintage Boss Blog today, as I have.

You & Me on a Jamboree! Music blog

June 22nd 2007 04:57
This "blog" doesn't really need any more plugs. It is very popular, for the reason that it provides downloads of a huge amount of music. Whether or not you believe in the downloading of music, there is no doubt this is a celebration of early Jamaican music.

Most people who download from this site would also purchase music of the same genre, but if you just can't get enough JA music, more than your budget allows for, then this is a good place to go

With the rain we're getting today in Sydney town I thought it would be fitting to watch a few videos. Ska and reggae are well represented on youtube, with clips and live footage from all over the world. You can easily find something new and exciting just by browsing around a little.

Mods Mayday Photos

If you're a regular reader you'll know Sydney Mods Mayday 2007 took place earlier this month. It was a great success with a fantastic mix of mods, skinhead and importantly everything in between. The Rocksteady Ratpack featuring a great lineup taken from some great Sydney bands entertained with The Get Set.

Skinhead photos

There can be no denying the great influence skinheads had and still have on reggae, and if you are interested in that connection, then you might enjoy the following website.

It is perhaps the largest archive of skinhead photos from the seventies and eighties

Since the explosion of the web, the BBC have given good exposure to reggae music, and well it should, with the place reggae has in UK music. Recently, BBC 6 had a weekend of Trojan to celebrate 40 years of the record company.

One of the features over this weekend was a blether, and it is a blether, by the Upsetter Lee Scratch Perry. For a limited time you can download his musings from the BBC 6 website for the weekend of Trojan

A good night was had last night celebrating Gen's 21st birthday and launching our EP Rocking Steady in Sydney. The venue was dominated by familiar faces, which is nice to see - always good to know we have certain folk willing to come out to see us.

It was also the debut of new guitarist Will, who is new to ska and reggae, but had a great first gig. I think he's going to come back! His willingness to solo has meant our sound has changed yet again - we're definitely sounding a lot different to how we did three years ago

Mods Mayday - the aftermath

May 7th 2007 10:09
Well once again it has come and gone. Mods Mayday has traditionally been one of the most successful events we’ve run in Sydney and this year was no exception. Despite the fact we only organised it three weeks ago, and only used myspace and word of mouth to promote the event, we had an exceptional turnout, with lots of young and old(er) coming out for the gig.

It was a pretty good room for the event – not too big and plenty of lounges for people to sit on. The Get Set came on and played a decent set of covers, though I think they actually performed better at their first gig late last year

This Is England - film review

March 29th 2007 07:03
I'd heard about this film some time ago and sat down to watch it last night with some anticipation, but a little bit of fear. The fear stemmed from a string of skinhead films painting skinheads not as a youth subculture, but as a generalised group of fascist thugs. One of the best parts of this film is that although there is the exploration of a nationalistic element, it also shows that many were not going to be sucked into that side of things and were more worried about having a good time.

Writer and director Shane Meadows has made quite a few films now, with a focus on working class English youth and their attempts to forge some kind of meaningful identity. This is England is somewhat autobiographical, and traces young lad Sean (his age isn't given, but he wouldn't be older than 11) and his growing friendships with some local skinheads, who make him feel welcome, something he craves following the death of his Dad and his being picked on at school. Trouble begins however, when Combo gets out of gaol and brings ideas to the group not all agree on

I stayed in Friday attempting to be a good student and keep both my dollars and my health intact. There wasn't that much on anyway though so no real loss on that front.

The following day, Saturday, was Take It or Leave It and I was curious to see how many people would turn up. The month before was good, but you expect a good turnout on the opening night of an event. I was pleased then, to see an even better turnout this month, particularly later in the night. I am not bragging either, but it is good to see people support a free local night out
