Strange Tenants Review
October 20th 2006 03:03
The Strange Tenants played at the Gaelic Club in Sydney last night with The Signals and Backy Skank and what a top night it was. The crowd wasn't huge, although for a Thursday night it was decent and by the time the Tenants came on it was a good showing.
The Strange Tenants were in Sydney to celebrate their 25th Birthday and to launch a a 4 CD set of new and live material. A top CD it is, with a good historical collection to have.
Anyway, we (The Signals) went on pretty early, but were received quite well, as were Backy Skank.
The Strange Tenants began with Soldier Boy, one of their best songs in my opinion and they didn't stop for the best part of two hours. It was good to hear the crowd favourites such as Grey Skies, Hard Times and Killer Zombies, but it was also great to hear some of the covers they didn't throw in last year at Mods Mayday. They did 007, Do the Ska and These Boots and they did them oh so well. Dave Lennon from the Allniters (and other bands) played on one track and the keys player from back in the day joined the band for most of the set.
The Strange Tenants sound is unmatched in Australian ska in my opinion. It is tight, the sax is captivating, they sing about local issues and they are obviously passionate about what they are doing.
Comparing it to the Beat a couple of weeks ago, I would say this gig at least matched it. It wasn't as packed, but this meant there was plenty of room for dancing. The ST lineup was the lineup they've played with for most of the years and as much as I want to see 2-tone era bands, I don't want it to feel like a cover band. You don't get a cover band with the Strange Tenants.
