The ethics of buying editorial in music street press
February 13th 2007 03:37
As we (The Signals) are going to Melbourne soon, I am trying to get some exposure in the Melbourne music street press, particularly The Beat and Inpress. Now I have dealt with Sydney street press a number of times, and know that they very much like to take your money, but you get very little from them. In the public listing sections, they often get gig details wrong because they take artistic licence or you don't get listed at all.
I have sometimes put in ads for events I have done, but at starting prices of $250, I can't do that very often.
Anyway, I got an email back from a certain street press editor saying we'll be placed in the news section, but a Q&A would depend on room. Of course if we considered paying to advertise in their magazine they could probably sort us out with an interview.
Now sorry, but I can't afford an ad. It is costing enough to put a CD out and get down to Melbourne, let alone pay $250 bucks for a small black and white ad. Why shouldn't small poor hard working bands get some kind of exposure when they travel interstate without having to pay through their arse for it.
At least allow some room for this kind of thing. I know they are running a business, but it is small bands (made up of punters) who support their magazine.
Another rant over...
