Soul Jazz release - Studio One Rude Boy
October 24th 2006 08:11
I was in a record shop today and saw a new Soul Jazz release titled Rude Boy, which is a compilation from the Studio One stable. Studio One needs little introduction, but was this just another average comp of rude boy songs?
Songs like Johnny Too Bad are on heaps of various artist CDs, but looking at the rest of the tracks and they have a bit more to offer in terms of how often they appear or more to the point, don't appear. Songs such as Bob Andy's Crime Don't Pay and John Holt doing Hooligan is another (but then I love Holt). All in all it is quite an original collection of songs, although I'm sure many collectors won't be especially impressed all in all.
I am happy it is available as a double LP as well as a CD, but the cover art is a bit underwhelming. Although a great picture, the old Wailers image has been used a bit too much now.
On the website it is going for about 11 pounds, which seems about standard for a Soul Jazz release. I wouldn't pay more than 20 Aussie bucks for it though.
Tracklisting:
1. Jackie Opel Youre Too Bad
2. Johnny Osbourne Murderer
3. John Holt Hooligan
4. Keith Mccarthy Everybody Rude Now
5. Owen Gray Ballistic Affair
6. Roy Richards Get Smart
7. Mr Foundation See Them A Come
8. Desmond Baker And The Clarendonians Rude Boy Gone To Jail
9. Jim Brown Love In The Dance
10. The Wailers Good Good Rudie
11. Dennis Brown Make It Easy On Yourself
12. Wailing Souls Dont Fight It
13. Dub Specialist Peace Theme
14. Freddie Mcgregor Bandulo
15. Dennis Brown Johnny Too Bad
16. Bob Andy Crime Dont Pay
17. The Soul Brothers - Mr Kiss A Bang Bang
18. Dudley Sibbley Run Boy Run
