The weekend that was - Take It or Leave It and Dynamite
February 12th 2007 03:56
Friday night I stayed in, apart from a late night visit to Sarays for Pide. (How good is pide, it is my take away of choice at the moment).
Saturday night was Take It or Leave It, of which I was involved in putting on, at the Sly Fox in Enmore. It was free to get in, which I think contributed to having a full pub for the majority of the night. By 3 am I was wishing people would go home so I could call it a night myself, but ended up playing rocksteady until close to 4 am.
The 2-tone and early Jamaican stuff went down the best in terms of the dancefloor, which for me is always pleasing, though I am sure there were folk there who enjoyed hearing some punk Djed for once. All in all a very good night and the success means we're likely to do it again next month.
Sunday came and I had a killer hangover, but was convinced (without too much trouble) to head out to Freedom Sounds, where the Dynamite boys were joining the FS boys on the decks. Pretty dismal showing due to the rain (rain in Sydney almost always means no punters), but the sounds were good and we had a good dance and a few bevvies.
It was a decent weekend, as it always is when the reggae is playing in the pubs!

That sounds like a sucessful weekend. I've had a pide from that place and they're pretty good. The gig at The Sly Fox sounded good, was it ska music too?

Also, pide is ho-hum. You really like it that much?

I think the next one will be March 10th. And I'm well aware of the cheap cocktails - during my first set they were calling out people's numbers to come collect, over my songs!

Barrington Levy is the man. Here I Come is one of my favourite dancehall songs.

It's excellant to hear that dj'd ska, rocksteady, 2 tone, etc can be successful when the main focus isn't a band playing at the venue.
It can be a little depressing when the only person that gets to enjoy the music is yourself at home in your living room - so I say that the dynamite/take it or leave it thing should definitely happen again.
