Trojan Records - April New Releases
April 25th 2006 09:37
The UK label synonymous with reggae is continually putting out new albums of classic Jamaican music. Some new releases in April include:
Trojan Selecta 2
This is a sampler and attempts to give a taste of what Trojan Records offers. It is relatively cheap – 5 pounds from their site, but it doesn’t have many tracks. Highlights include Phyllis Dillon’s Don’t Stay Away and Pama International’s Life Is What Happens, but only because they are one of the only contemporary bands getting a look-in on the Trojan label.
Dip And Fall Back - Dr. Kinsey To Haile Selassie: Classic Jamaican Mento
This is something a bit different with songs featured that aren’t seen on any Trojan release. Not for someone getting into reggae, but for the Jamaican music fanatic.
Various Artists: Let Me Tell You Boy - Reggae Sisters
There are so many good female Jamaican vocalists and though Trojan have gone down this road before, the album is still good. The Gaylettes doing the song Dusty Springfield made famous, Son of A Preacher Man, is a gem, even better than the original. The album draws on songs from rocksteady to lovers. Good value buy.
About Trojan Records for those not in the know
In Short:
Trojan Records is now owned by Sanctuary Records and release a large amount of classic Jamaican music. A lot is reissued, while some is rare and has never been released. They are generally accepted as one of the top reggae record labels today and historically. The label started in 1967, folded and was then started again in 1968. They were at the time releasing current Jamaican artists who were popular with the local Jamaican community in the UK and subcultures such as skinheads, mods and later punks. They had quite a large amount of UK chart success including some number ones and most of the top reggae and ska artists have been on at least one Trojan release, if not many. More about Trojan records in the future.
