Trojan Records June New Releases
June 23rd 2006 11:44
Four new releases for June from this esteemed name in reggae. Nothing really ground breaking from Trojan this month, but interesting angles nonetheless. Checking out the prices through the Trojan website, I wouldn’t buy from them – they do seem rather overpriced, but you can usually find these releases everywhere for decent prices.
Various Artists: Trojan Sound System
Some have suggested these series of CDs have replaced the box sets, though I hope not. Perhaps they are just another line. This CD is rather brief and really just an introduction to reggae CD. The idea is to provide different songs from all the periods of reggae. I don’t know what purpose putting Bob Marley and the Wailers Soul Rebel serves, but to sell more CDs, but whatever. Some good songs like The Heptones, Through the Fire I Come, but nothing that makes me overly excited.
Horace Andy: Natty Dread A Weh She Want
Reggae fans will know how good a voice this man has. His roots reggae is penetratingly chilling and this is a good album to have in your collection. It is a re-release of the album produced by Tapper Zukie, with 8 additional tracts to boot including a favourite of mine Easy Come Easy Go.
Various Artists: Original Riddims: 24 Of Reggae's Most Sampled Cuts
I love the idea of this album, but there’s a reason these songs have been sampled so much and that is because they are popular. Most of these songs have appeared on numerous releases already because of this popularity. A top selection of tracks though. I am surprised Sky Larking or Mr Bassie by Horace Andy isn’t on here or Cocaine, but am not surprised tracks such as Ba Ba Boom by the Jamaicans or Train to Skaville by the Ethiopians are on here. Another introduction to reggae in my opinion.
Various Artists: DJ Andy Smith Presents: Trojan Document
I suppose Andy Smith’s connection to Portishead and his rep as a DJ will help sell some of these records, but once again is just a token compilation. I love the songs on it – you can’t go wrong with artists such as John Holt, Desmond Dekker, Justin Hinds and Phyllis Dillon but it wouldn’t make me buy the album. Once again, a compilation for the reggae newbie.
